In his hand, a seated young man holds a double mirror. This reminds of Samyn’s earlier painting Narcissus. The painting style, which mimics that of Caravaggio, and the painting’s fiery colours suggest the portrait shows some kind of Mefisto. Lost in the fascination of his own image, this young man seems captured within his own representation.

Un homme est assis et tient dans sa main un double miroir. Cette scène rappelle une précédente peinture de l’artiste : Narcissus. Le style “à la Caravaggio” couplé à des couleurs flamboyantes confèrent au portrait un air de Méphistophélès. Perdu dans le sortilège qu’exhale sa propre image, l’homme semble prisonnier d’un masque à sa propre effigie.
