The Golden Calf

In a small alcove shielded by a rope barrier, the artist has placed a 17th-century painting, the subject of which is the adoration of the golden calf. The lighting on the work is intentionally so strong that it is impossible to discern the image except by a considerable shifting of viewpoint. This painting, representing the deviation of representation via the adoration of an idol, is itself put in a similar position to the calf. Being illuminated from all sides, it is dazzled, suggesting not only adoration, but also a certain shyness due to the forbidden nature of its representation.
Pour cette œuvre, l’artiste installe, dans une alcôve, un tableau du XVIIe siècle dont on ne peut s’approcher et qui a pour sujet l’adoration du Veau d’or. L’éclairage intentionnellement dirigé sur l’œuvre est si fort qu’il ne permet pas de la discerner, sauf en décalant fortement son point de vue. Ce tableau, représentant les dérives de la représentation au travers de l’adoration d’une idole, est ici mis lui-même dans une position similaire au veau. Mais éclairé de toutes parts, il se retrouve « ébloui », ce qui suggère autant un mouvement d’adoration que son contraire : celui de la pudeur inhérente à l’interdit de la représentation.
