This is a self-portrait by Samyn. Turning around with a disturbing slowness, the artist seems to be asking questions of us as much as of himself. Referring to animality, flesh, the body as a vehicle for energy and urges, he has stripped the image bare – seemingly in order to reach its center, in an attempt to track down the very core of being.

Se retournant avec une inquiétante lenteur, l’artiste semble nous interroger, autant qu’il s’interroge lui-même. Cette œuvre fait référence à l’animalité, à la carnation, au corps en tant que vecteur d’énergie et de pulsions. Le travail du peintre n’est-il pas de dénuder l’image pour aller en son centre, pour traquer le noyau de l’être ?
