Fate Piece I (Activation I): Fate for River, 2010
Performative document, tissue and stone, variable dimensions

Fate Piece I is an ongoing performative and sculptural work that can be activated in multiple ways. There is a new activation each time a friend or acquirer gives the artist a stone that he or she has searched for while taking a walk. The artist will then, after printing them on the stone, engrave the hand lines of that same person. Following that, she or he will describe to the artist the circumstances and modalities of when and how that stone should be disposed of, through throwing, breaking, being left behind or given away. The artist will consign that information to a protocol. The act of flaying aims to ritualize a moment for one to let go of the attachment to his or her own fate.

Fate Piece I est une œuvre performative et sculpturale en cours qui peut être activée de plusieurs manières. Une nouvelle activation s’effectue chaque fois qu’un ami ou un acquéreur confie à l’artiste une pierre qu’il ou elle aura ramassée au cours d’une balade. Par la suite, l’artiste va reproduire sur cette pierre les lignes de la main de cette personne, puis les graver. Celle ou celui-ci décide des circonstances et de la manière dont il ou elle va se « débarrasser » de la pierre (soit jetée, soit brisée, soit déposée, soit donnée).
Le tout sera retranscrit sous forme de protocole par l’artiste. Ce geste de renoncement à l’attachement a pour but de ritualiser un lâcher-prise que tout un chacun peut entretenir avec la conception de son destin.
