Breath Piece III: A Breath Timeline, 2013

A Breath Timeline evolved from a collaboration between Fabrice Samyn and his a model, the father of a friend, suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. Facial features and pencil lines are intimately intertwined; each of the model’s exhalations corresponds with a drawn line. The model is asked to count each of his breaths (an inhalation followed by an exhalation) until he loses track.
At this moment the drawing stops. This way, some drawings are more detailed than others, but all are executed with delicate touches and lightweight contours, illustrating the vulnerability of the moment. The artist here draws a parallel between the volatility of breathing and the self-consciousness that comes and goes, from birth to old age.

A Breath Timeline trouve son origine dans la rencontre entre Fabrice Samyn
et son modèle, le père d’une amie atteint de la maladie d’Alzheimer. Traits du visage et traits de crayon sont intimement liés ; à chaque expiration du modèle correspond un tracé de crayon. Le modèle est invité à énumérer ses respirations (une inspiration suivie d’une expiration) jusqu’à ce qu’il perde le fil. À ce moment-là, le dessin s’arrête. Dès lors, certains dessins sont plus détaillés que d’autres mais tous sont exécutés d’effleurements et de contours légers illustrant la vulnérabilité du moment. L’artiste fait ici un parallèle entre la volatilité de la respiration et celle de la conscience de soi qui va et vient de la naissance
à la vieillesse.
