Beyond the sacrum is a crystal reproduction of the human coccyx (tailbone), the group of atrophied vertebrae which shows the relic of the tail of our primate origins. In a lying position, at rest or after death, the human coccyx points upwards and its shape assumes the appearance of a pagoda or a stupa – those Buddhists temples, reliquaries, ossuaries and first representations of the Buddha. Through this perspective, the sculpted tailbone is here simultaneously both relic and shrine. Cut from rock crystal, a material that is both transparent and potentially prismatic, the object enshrines animality. The title of the piece is therefore not without reference to Friedrich Nietzsche’s Beyond Good and Evil.

Au-delà du Sacrum est une reproduction en cristal du coccyx humain, cet ensemble de vertèbres atrophiées, relique d’une queue témoignant de notre origine de primate. Dans la position couchée, de repos ou de mort, le coccyx pointe vers le haut et sa forme prend l’allure d’une pagode ou d’un stûpa, ces temples bouddhistes reliquaires/ossuaires et premières représentations de Bouddha. Sous cet angle de vue, le fragment de squelette devient la structure qui pourrait l’abriter ; simultanément relique et reliquaire. Taillé dans du cristal de roche, un matériau à la fois transparent et possible prisme générateur de toutes les couleurs, l’objet sacralise l’animalité. Le titre de l’œuvre n’est, dès lors, pas sans référence à Au-delà du bien et du mal de Friedrich Nietzsche.
