Both recorded (video on two monitors) and performative (during the opening reception), the work Am I the same? is based on a story recited simultaneously by two twin brothers, not actors, who move around the gallery so that the viewer can no longer identify with certainty who is who. Feeding on popular culture and aesthetic codes of the fairy-tale, Samyn probes the tensions inherent in identity by referring to the notion of resemblance rather than dissemblance. In this work, the artist’s involvement with language becomes apparent, as well as his using the method of “mise en abyme”, a recurring theme in his oeuvre.

À la fois visuelle (la vidéo sur deux moniteurs) et performative (pendant le vernissage), cette œuvre intitulée Am I the same? se base sur l’écriture d’un conte récité simultanément par deux frères jumeaux, non-comédiens, qui se déplacent dans la galerie de telle façon que le spectateur ne puisse plus identifier avec évidence qui est qui. Se nourrissant de la culture populaire et des codes esthétiques du conte, Fabrice Samyn sonde les tensions identitaires en évoquant la notion de ressemblance plutôt que celle de dissemblance. On sent à travers cette œuvre l’implication de la langue dans la pratique de l’artiste ainsi que l’utilisation du procédé de mise en abîme, récurrente chez lui.
