A BREATH CYCLE, 2017

Performance

A Breath Cycle consists of a series of performances or Breath Pieces that have been developed following the same logic used in other participative and collaborative projects by Fabrice Samyn.
A site-specific selection of seven Breath Pieces collectively form A Breath Cycle.

The separate parts of the cycle are connected. They can be presented as a unity or in a variety of combinations. Some of the Breath Pieces are interactive, inviting the audience to join in the practice. Others, like Undressing Time, are the result of collaboration, including one with choreographer and dancer Manon Santkin. The protocol, or score, lies at the heart of each performance. The protocol is an open score for performer interaction and co-author collaboration, and frames audience participation.

Each of the Breath Pieces articulates itself by creating a correspondence between an action accompanying an inhalation and an action accompanying an exhalation, in such a way that an awareness of our perception of time is encouraged.

Breath Piece I: Light’s Treshold; at each inhalation, a granddaughter lights a candle while the grandmother blows out that same candle as she exhales.

Breath Piece IV: Being Cloud (Activation II and III); with each exhalation, a blind friend of the artist is sculpting a cloud out of fibre porcelain.

Breath Piece V: Undressing Time; each inhalation induces dressing and each exhalation induces undressing.

Breath Piece VI: Vanity’s Ballroom; Shostakovich’s “Waltz No. 2” has been reproduced only with the breath of the performers, inducing specific movements.

Breath Piece VII: Womb; two performers surround a willing audience member and tune their breath to his in his ears.

Breath Piece VIII: Blink of the Night; each audience member is asked to gently open their eyes while exhaling and gently close them while inhaling.

Breath Piece IX: Breath Border; the audience is asked to sit by twos in front of each other and follow with their hands the perception of the other’s breath.
