Mourning Through The Day (Or The Covered Mirror) is a triptych, with each of the canvasses having been painted at a different time of day. The three paintings depict an object concealed by a drape. The act of hiding enables the light and time to be revealed more tellingly. The interplay of shadow and light, accentuated here by the folds of the drape, marks the passage of time. Moreover, the hidden object is a mirror. Fabrice Samyn is referring to the practice of covering mirrors in Judaism: the bereaved cover them with large drapes at the time of the death, until the end of the first week following the deceased’s burial. A powerful symbol against human vanity, which is translated twice by the technique chosen by the artist, because a painted mirror can never reflect an image, since it is itself an image.

Mourning Through The Day (Or The Covered Mirror) est un triptyque dont chacune des toiles a été peinte à un moment différent de la journée. Les trois peintures représentent un objet caché par un drapé. L’acte de cacher permet de mieux révéler la lumière et le temps. Le jeu d’ombre et de lumière, accentué ici par les plis du drapé, marque ce passage du temps. En outre, l’objet caché est un miroir. Fabrice Samyn fait alors référence au geste de couvrir les miroirs dans le judaïsme : les endeuillés recouvrent ceux-ci de grands draps au moment du décès, et ce, jusqu’à la fin de la première semaine après l’enterrement du défunt. Symbole fort contre la vanité humaine, qui se traduit ici doublement par la technique choisie par l’artiste, car un miroir peint ne pourra jamais refléter une image, de par le fait qu’il est lui-même déjà une image.
